How to Register on Income Tax Portal

To register for the e-filing portal, which is an online platform provided by the Income Tax Department of India to file income tax returns electronically, you can follow these steps:
- Visit the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department of India, which can be accessed at https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/.
- Click on the "Register Yourself" button, which is located on the right side of the homepage.
- Choose your user type as "Individual," "HUF," "Firm," "Company," or "Other."
- Enter your basic details such as name, date of birth, and PAN (Permanent Account Number). Note that your PAN will be your user ID for the portal.
- Fill in your contact details such as email address and mobile number.
- Choose a password and security question to complete the registration process.
After registering, you will receive an activation link on your registered email address. You need to click on that link to activate your account on the e-filing portal. Once your account is activated, you can log in to the portal using your PAN as the user ID and the password you set during the registration process.
It is important to note that you must have a valid PAN and be a taxpayer to register on the e-filing portal.
Registration of taxpayers on the e-filing website is categorized on the basis of three subcategories as follows:
Prerequisite for Individual users-
This pre-login service is available to all taxpayers (except Companies) who want to register on and access the e-Filing portal. The Registration service enables the taxpayer to access and track all tax-related activities.
Documents required for availing of this service are as follows:
- Valid and active Permanent account number
- Valid Mobile number
- Valid Email ID
- Valid Current Address
So there are eight simple steps for the E-Filing Portal as follows:
- Visit the E-filing Portal and click on register.
- Enter your PAN number and select the user type as an individual and click on continue.

- Enter all the mandatory details such as Name, DOB, Gender( if applicable), and Residential address as per your PAN CARD on the basic details page and continue it.

- As the PAN is validated, the contact details page appears for individual taxpayers. Enter your contact details as your Primary mobile number, registered email id, and residential address, and click on continue.

- Two separate OTPs are sent to your registered mobile number and on your registered email id as mentioned above. Enter the separate 6-digit OTPs sent to your registered mobile number and on your email id.

NOTE:
- OTP will be valid for 15 minutes only.
- You have three attempts to enter the correct OTP.
- The OTP expiry countdown timer on the screen tells you when the OTP will expire.
- On clicking Resend OTP, a new OTP will be generated and sent.
- Edit the details on the page if necessary, and click on confirm.

- On the set password page, enter your desired password in both the set password and the confirm password in the text boxes. Enter your personalized message and click confirm.

NOTE:
- Do not click on the refresh or back button.
- While entering your new password, be careful of the password policy
- It should be of at least 8 characters and at most 14 characters.
- It should include both uppercase and lowercase characters.
- It should contain a number.
- It should have a special character( eg: @#$)
- When you are successfully registered, click on proceed to login to start the login process.

NOTE:
Log in to the e-Filing portal and update your profile to access all available services. Pre-requisite for HINDU UNDIVIDED FAMILY-
The users must have the following mandatory details:
- Valid PAN Card
- Valid Mobile Number.
- Valid E-mail Address preferably belonging to “KARTA”.
- Perform these simple steps and registered yourself as a HUF user:
- Visit the E-filing Portal and click on register.
- Enter your PAN number and select the user type as HINDU UNDIVIDED FAMILY and click on continue.
- Enter all the mandatory details such as the Name of the HUF, Date of Incorporation, Gender( if applicable), and Residential address as per your PAN CARD on the basic details page and continue it.
Fill in the following details:
- Password details
- PAN details of KARTA
- Contact details of KARTA
- Address of HUF
- Click Submit.
Two separate OTPs are sent for RESIDENTS to your registered mobile number and on your registered email id and for NON-RESIDENTS on their email id as mentioned above. Enter the separate 6-digit OTPs sent to your registered mobile number and on your email id.
NOTE:
- OTP will be valid for 15 minutes only.
- You have three attempts to enter the correct OTP.
- The OTP expiry countdown timer on the screen tells you when the OTP will expire.
- On clicking Resend OTP, a new OTP will be generated and sent.
- Edit the details on the page if necessary, and click on confirm.
- When you are successfully registered, click on proceed to login to start the login process.
Prerequisite for Other than Individuals and HUF:
The users must have the following mandatory details:
- Valid PAN Card
- Valid Mobile Number
- Valid E-mail Address preferable belonging to the Principal contact person.
- Perform these simple steps and registered yourself as a person other than Individual and HUF:
- Visit the E-filing Portal and click on register.
Enter your PAN of the organization/entity and select the user type as a person other than Individual and HUF and select the sub-user type as per the PAN:
- Company
- Body of Individuals(BOI)
- Local Authority
- Firm / Trust
- Association of Persons(AOP)
- Artificial Juridical Person
- Government
Enter all the mandatory details such as the Name of the Company, Type of the company, and Date of Incorporation on the basic details page and continue it.
Fill in the following details:
- Password details
- Personal details of Principal Contact Person
- Contact details of Principal Contact Person
- Address of the Organisation/Entity
- Click Submit.
Two separate OTPs are sent for RESIDENTS to your registered mobile number and on your registered email id and for NON-RESIDENTS on their email id as mentioned above. Enter the separate 6-digit OTPs sent to your registered mobile number and on your email id.
